Rev. Ronald J. Braud, a retired Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, died on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the age of 81. Fr. Braud was born on August 19, 1939 to Claude and Selma Cavalier Braud in Marrero, LA. He attended Immaculate Conception School and Holy Name of Mary High School in New Orleans. At age 15, Ronald was asked by Archbishop Rummel in a private meeting why he wanted to become a priest to which he replied “I want to save my own soul and I want to save the souls of others”. Ronald entered St. Joseph Seminary as a junior and continued his studies at Notre Dame Seminary. Fr. Ronald J. Braud was ordained on December 19, 1964 and celebrated his first Mass on December 20, 1964 at his family’s parish church, St. Rita in Harahan. His first assignment as a priest was assistant to the pastor at Resurrection of Our Lord where he served as moderator of the CYO, altar servers and the CCD program. He later served in Mater Dolorosa, St. Cecilia and St. Andrew parishes. In 1972, Fr. Braud began working on his PhD in Medieval and Early Modern European History, receiving his doctorate in 1977 from the University of Southwestern Louisiana where he served as chaplain at Opelousas General Hospital and three area nursing homes. In 1980, Fr. Braud was assigned to Archbishop Blenk High School where he served as chaplain, counselor and religion teacher for twenty years. Fr. Braud was assigned to St. Louis King of France parish in 2000 and served as Parochial Vicar until his retirement in 2010. In addition to his parish assignments, Fr. Braud served as secretary of the Algiers-Plaquemines Deanery and Spiritual Director of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Bernard and Downtown Particular Council. Fr. Braud was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Selma Cavalier Braud and his sister, Judy Ann Braud Coney. He is survived by first cousins, Larry J. Cavalier, Gwendolyn C. Deroche, Dorothy C. Delhom and first cousin, Godchild Louis Paul Dugas and a host of second and third cousins. The family would like to thank R&R Home Care, the employees and staff of Chateau de Notre Dame Assisted Living Facility and the hospice and private sitters of Chateau de Notre Dame for their loving care up to the time of his passing.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church located at 1609 Carrollton Avenue in Metairie, LA on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
