Rayford M. Chatelain

Rayford Matthew Chatelain went to his eternal home on Friday, October 12, 2018 at the age of 94. He is survived by his loving wife, Vera Perret Vujnovich; his sons, Brian (Jane) and Bruce (Karen); and two grandsons, Ben and Jacob. He was preceded in death by his former wives, Mary Fridley Chatelain and Joycelynn Garrison Chatelain, and his parents, Orphelia Chatelain and Azema Guillory Chatelain.
Rayford was proud of his cajun heritage and enjoyed telling everyone his "Cajun Orgin of Life" joke. He was born in New Orleans but grew up in Hessmer, LA. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and proudly served his country for three years. Rayford was a R.T.A. bus driver for 40 years. He was a devout Catholic and faithfully served at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church as an eucharistic minister and also conducted communion services weekly at the Atrium.
Rayford was previously a member of Oblates of St. Benedict and the Knights of Columbus, in addition to several social organizations: AARP, Delta Golden Age Club, and was a Duke in three Mardi Gras balls.
The family would like to thank Notre Dame Hospice and his nurse, Deborah Chapman, for their loving care for over two and a half years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive in Metairie, LA on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until Mass time. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
