Tribute

Joseph Henry Vincent, III, 91, of New Orleans, Louisiana, former resident of Terrytown and Garden Park in Gretna, died peacefully in his daughter's home on November 24, 2022. Born on November 7, 1931, in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years Ellen P. MacKenzie and his parents, Joseph Henry Vincent, Jr. and Marguerite Serpas Vincent of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Joseph was raised in the 7th Ward and St. Roch neighborhoods of New Orleans. He attended Charles Gayarre School then St. Aloysius High School from which he graduated in 1948. Joseph was grateful for the formation he received from the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and exhibited those values throughout his life. He proudly joined the United States Army at 19 years old and served as Corporal in the 7th Ordinance Media Maintenance Company in the Korean War. Following the war, he attended and graduated from Louisiana State University in 1957 with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with a minor in Spanish. He married his former wife, Eleanor Vedros Vincent, in 1964 and remained dear friends with her until his death. Joseph was a loyal employee of the Times Picayune for 43 years (1958-2001) where he worked as a proofreader and copy editor in the Living Section.
Joseph had an unceasing curiosity which led to many hobbies and interests. He was rarely seen without a camera in hand. His favorite things included spicy food, his pets, the news, true crime stories, billiards, foreign languages, reading, art, and computers. Joseph could start a conversation with anyone anywhere and was often seen bragging about his grandchildren wherever he went. He will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, patience, and dedication to his Catholic faith. Joseph was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Cletus Parish, and most recently St. Rita Parish in Harahan.
Survivors include his three children: daughter Gayle Vincent Callahan and husband Jim of Cypress, Texas, son Eric Vincent and girlfriend April Felps of Gretna, daughter Connie Vincent Frost of Harahan; step sons, John Picou of Metairie and William Picou of Weatherford, Texas; grandsons: Steven Callahan, Michael Callahan, and Ali Cavdar; granddaughter, Ela Cavdar; step grandson, Roger Picou; and Eleanor Vedros Vincent, mother of his children. The family would like to especially thank Nelree “Nel” Williams, his dedicated caregiver. Further appreciation is given to Quvonda “Que” Henderson, Debora Chapman RN, Denitra McDonald, Pat Galloway, and all the staff at Notre Dame Hospice.
