John M. Spencer was called to his heavenly home on Wednesday, May 27, 2020. Even though he was called a "fighter" by many, the aftermaths of covid-19 along with dementia finally exhausted him.
John lived a full life. He was born in the Irish Channel. He was a salesman and sold everything from cars and real estate to plumbing, fire extinguishers and encyclopedias. He could sell stripes to a zebra if he wanted. He also served 2 years in the Army overseas in Germany where he played some football and earned the title of mail carrier after scoring the winning touchdown in a championship game.
John was a simple man. He loved sports, gardening, and garage sales. After a pilgrimage to Medjugore, he grew deeper in his Catholic faith and love for our Blessed Mother. He was known as the "rosary giver". It became his passion in life to touch as many people as possible with hope and prayer.
John is survived by his son, Johnny and his children, Katie and Brandon Spencer and his daughter Cindy, her husband Stephen and their daughter Caroline. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, his parents, and his six siblings: Harry, Earl, Billy, Anna Mae, Anna Belle, and Mary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the "Meal Program for the Needy" are preferred. Contributions may be made to First Baptist New Orleans, Attn: Care Effect, 5290 Canal Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Angela Merici Church, 901 Beverly Garden Drive in Metairie, LA on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at 10:00 am. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am. He will be laid to rest with his wife (affectionately referred to as his "angel in blue") in Cypress Grove Cemetery in New Orleans, LA.
