Wallace Wesley Barr III died surrounded by his family on his 73rd birthday, March 24, 2017, of complications from a progressive degenerative muscle disease and Addison's Disease. His battle was fought with set back after set back and he remained strong to the end. Wally is the son of Theone Patricia Switzer, age 97, and the late Wallace Wesley Barr, Jr. Wally is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Sandra Pons Barr; his sons, Wallace Wesley Barr, IV (Nicole) and Sean Barr; step children, Leslie Mannino Segura (Robert) and Dr. Stephen John Mannino (Jennifer); grandchildren, Vivian, Juliana, and Gabriel Barr; step grandchildren, Elise and Miller Segura and Christopher and Grace Mannino; brother, Robert Barr (Vivian); step siblings, Dawn Muscarello (Frank), Pam Wang, and Earl Meyer, Jr. In addition to his father, Wally was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack and James Barr, and his step father, Earl Howard Meyer, Sr.
Wally was a graduate of Cor Jesu High School, attended Tulane University, and graduated from Loyola University. Following discharge from the United States Army Reserve. he became an accomplished pilot and flew for a commercial airline for many years. Thereafter, he went into telecommunication sales. He was a member of Crescent City Business Referral Network and Louisiana Technology Council. He was a gourmet cook and particularly enjoyed preparing dinners for family and friends. He enjoyed traveling and growing tropical hibiscus. Wally served as Vice President of the New Orleans Hibiscus Society for 20 years and was actively involved in Hibiscus shows during that time. He was also a member of the American Hibiscus Society, Red Stick Hibiscus Society, and Mike Bernard Acadiana Chapter.
The family would like to express deep gratitude to Dr. Robert C. Ryan for his extraordinary care throughout Wally's illness, and to Father Robert S. Gerlich, SJ for his support and guidance, and to special friends Dr. Meade Phelps, Ellis Bordelon, Robert and Gail Price who were devoted to Wally.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Dominic Church, 775 Harrison Ave. in New Orleans, LA on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 12:00 Noon with visitation before Mass beginning at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow in Hope Mausoleum, 4841 Canal St. in New Orleans, LA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Loyola Jesuit Community with a notation "Orphan Girls Fund", c/o Fr. Leo Nicoll, 1575 Calhoun St., New Orleans, LA 70118.
